Lecture 11 Kinematic Diagram

From physical machine to analytical model:

To analyze motion, one must separate the essential from the irrelevant. The shape, mass, and material of a link do not govern it's motion - only the type and location of its connections do.

Quiz: Short Answer Questions

Instructions: Answer the following questions in 2-3 sentences, based on the provided source material.

7. What is the primary purpose of creating a kinematic diagram for a mechanism?

8. How is a revolute pair between two links represented in a kinematic diagram?

Answer Key

7. The purpose of a kinematic diagram, or skeleton diagram, is to simplify a mechanism for kinematic analysis. It removes all irrelevant geometric features and inertial parameters, retaining only the essential features that govern the relative movements, such as the type of pairs and their relative locations.

8. A revolute pair is represented by a small circle in a kinematic diagram. The center of this circle denotes the axis of the revolute pair, and the links are represented by lines connected at this circle.
