Lecture 16 Whitworth quick - return (motion) mechanism
Length of [Coupler ( Originally Link - 3) OR Driving Crank (Revised Link - 2)] is made shorter than that of [Crank ( Originally Link - 2) OR Frame (Revised Link -1)] in Slotted-lever quick-return mechanism so that the output link, namely, Slotted Lever [Revised link -4] performs oscillation.
If the length of Revised Crank (link -2) of Slotted-lever quick-return is made longer than that of its [Frame (Revised link-1) OR Crank (Originally link -2)], then, output link, namely, Slotted Lever [Revised link -4], will perform rotation instead of oscillation. Such a mechanism is used in shapers and slotting machines. Obviously, such mechanism is an example of second inversion of Crank - Slider Mechanism as crank [ Originally link - 2] is fixed and is known as Whitworth quick - return (motion) mechanism.
