Vertical Lettering

Pencil Grade : H

Height of letters or characters,
h = 3.5 mm

d = diameter of pencil or size of pencil = 3.5 / 10 = 0.35 mm for Lettering type B as per sp 46 : 2003 since d = h / 10

a = distance between characters / numbers / letters from Table 7.2 = 0.7 mm

e = distance between words = 2.1 mm

b3 = distance between baselines ( for Uppercase letters / Capital letters) = 4.55 mm

Draw two horizontal construction lines ( narrow / thin continuous lines) at a distance of 3.5 mm apart as guidelines for lettering at a distance of 2.1 mm (distance 'e' )  from border lines using 2H grade pencil.

At a distance of 2.1 mm (distance 'e' ) from border line using 2H grade pencil draw two vertical construction lines ( narrow / thin continuous lines) as guidelines for lettering at a distance of 3.5 mm apart , thereby creating a square space of side 3.5 mm to accommodate first letter.

Similarly second letter space is marked at a distance of 0.7 mm ( distance 'a' )

Further, distance between two rows of lettering shall be (b3 - h) = 23 - 18 mm = 5 mm

Choose enlarging scale:

Scale 5:1

h = 3.5 × 5 = 17.5  mm (Approximately 18 mm)
d = 0.35 mm ( Scale 1:1 / Full )
a = 0.70 × 5 = 3.50 mm (Rounded up to 4 mm)
e = 2.1 x 5 = 10.5 mm ( Approximately 11 mm)
b3 = 4.55 × 5 = 22.75 mm (Approximately 23 mm)

So , Square space for each character / letter / number shall be of side of 18 mm.

If one accommodates a grid of 6 × 6 small unit squares ( of size '3 mm') in each square space, then out of square side of length 18 mm, seven vertical ( as well as seven horizontal ) grid lines of width / thickness 0.35 mm shall occupy 2.45 mm (0.35 x 7)  and (18 - 2.45 =)  15.55 mm / 6 = 2.59 mm  space shall be available for drawing vertical as well as horizontal stroke lines of characters / letters (as applicable) whose width or thickness is 0.35 mm each, that is, (2.59 - 0.35 =) 2.24 mm more than required / desirable 0.35 mm and one gets  square grid with recognizable grid lines with a pencil size d = 0.35 mm.
